Starting January 21, 2026 you will write an email in the TOEFL writing section. You will have seven minutes to read the instructions and write the email.

You rent an apartment from Lakeside Residences. For the past three weeks, your upstairs neighbors have been hosting loud gatherings late at night, often continuing past midnight. The noise from music, loud conversations, and footsteps makes it very difficult for you to sleep, especially on weekdays when you have to wake up early for work.
Write an email to the property manager, Ms. Kim. In your email, do the following:
- Clearly explain the situation, including how long it has been happening, what kind of noise it is, and how it affects your daily life.
- Describe what you have already done to try to solve the problem on your own.
- Ask what actions the property management can take to address the issue, and whether there are any official procedures you should follow if the problem continues.
Sample Answer
Dear Ms. Kim,
My name is Scott Tenormin, and I rent apartment 506 in Lakeside Residences. I’m writing because my upstairs neighbors have been extremely noisy over the past three weeks. Almost every night they host loud parties that prevent me from sleeping. This has a profound effect on my quality of life because my shifts at work begin in the early morning. I have already tried talking to them about the problem, but they have ignored my requests to keep quiet at night. Would it be possible for you to handle this issue by contacting my neighbors? I am sure that if you send an official warning they will change their habits. Meanwhile, it would be great if you could let me know what procedures I should follow the next time this occurs.
Thanks you very much,
Scott Tenorman
