TOEFL 2026 contains a new “Write an Email” question. You will have seven minutes to read the instructions and write the email.
—
You are a university student and usually work on assignments in the campus library in the evenings. The library is a useful place to study because it is quiet, and contains useful books and journals. Recently, the library has been closing earlier than usual, which has made it difficult for you to complete your assignments.
Write an email to Ms. Severin, the library manager. In your email, do the following:
- Explain why the library is important for your studies
- Ask why the opening hours have changed
- Request information about whether the library will stay open later again
Sample Answer
Dear Ms. Severin,
I am writing to ask about the library’s new operating hours. I’m a third-year student at the university, and I often work on my assignments in the library because it is always very quiet and provides easy access to useful books and journal articles. Unfortunately, due to the new hours I have been forced to work on my projects in my dorm room, which is often quite noisy. Just last week I was working on a major assignment for my political science class while the residents of the room across the hall hosted a huge party.
Could you possibly tell me why the hours have changed? Moreover, could you let me know if this is a permanent change? If the library will return to its former hours in the future, please let me know.
Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions.
Best wishes,
Clark Kesselring
