Restricting Coffee in the Library

Starting next semester, students will no longer be allowed to bring coffee or other beverages into the library. University officials have announced that this change aims to protect library resources, as over the past year, several books, computers, and desks have been damaged by spilled drinks, leading to costly repairs and replacements. Additionally, the university plans to create a coffee lounge in the student center, where students can enjoy drinks while studying in a more relaxed and social environment. The administration believes this will maintain the library’s functionality while still accommodating students’ needs.

Question:

The woman states her opinion of the proposed plan.  Briefly summarize the plan, and then state the reasons the woman gives for her opinion.

Sample Answer:

The university has announced that starting next semester, students will not be allowed to bring coffee or other liquids into the library. This is because the university is concerned that students can spill whatever they are drinking onto the books and furniture and they plan to build a special coffee lounge near the library for students. However, the woman in the conversation completely disagrees with this idea. She points out that occasionally someone will spill a drink but that’s rare and most students use lids. On top of that, she says the furniture in the library is pretty old already, so no one complains about damage. Secondly, says that she concentrates better on her studies in the library because it’s quiet.  The student center is noisy, and the lounge will probably be noisy too. She mentions that since the lounge will be noisy, she’ll probably just end up skipping coffee breaks altogether.
