Here’s my star turn in the PIE News’ “Five Minutes With…” series. I’m normally shy when it comes to talking about myself, but I do love the PIE.
In those five minutes, I recommended a few things you might want to check out:
- A podcast from the British Council called “Our World, Connected.” It’s hosted by Christine Wilson, who is the organization’s Director of Research and Insight. Each episode highlights some of the initiatives and programs that the British Council is involved in. In light of current events, it could be a good starting point for discussions of soft power in a changing world. There aren’t any easy answers to the questions people are asking about this subject in 2025 but it is undeniable that there is good work being done.
- A new (regular) column in University Affairs authored by Paul Wells. Wells has long been a thoughtful supporter of higher-ed in Canada. He’s also one of Canada’s best all-round journalists. His first two columns, about the “growing estrangement” between higher-ed and the general public, are required reading for anyone seeking to understand some of the challenges that Canadian universities currently face. Link in the comments.
- Nicholas Lemann’s new book, “Higher Admissions: The Rise, Decline and Return of Standardized Testing.” This is a wonderful follow-up to his classic “The Big Test.” I’ve recommended this book quite a few times in this space so I’ll leave it at that. But you really ought to acquire a copy if you haven’t already.
