ETS, TED and Khan Academy have launched the KhanTED Institute.  Details are sparse at this time, but the ultimate goal seems to be the creation of a degree-granting institution.

Once accredited, the institute will issue undergraduate degrees which it describes as competency-based. Says the website:

“Move forward by mastering skills, not by just logging class credits. Emphasis is on developing, applying and demonstrating competency. This means motivated learners can complete the program faster, and everyone graduates with verified competencies.”

The institute will begin taking applications from students sometime in 2027. A full degree will cost under $10,000.

It is an interesting initiative. I suppose the trick will be for the partners to distinguish themselves from organizations that are already successful in the competency-based learning space (like, say, Western Governors University).
